Where would Lysekil have been without the stone industry? When the herring catches decreased, local people needed other ways to make a living. They learnt to cut and handle the red granite, and several quarries opened within a short space of time. For a time, Lysekil had as many as 50 of these. Lysekil’s church is built from granite, as is the impressive building near Södra hamnen (the Southern Harbour), which is home to the local newspaper. The prettiest granite is found in the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve, which is a wonderful place to experience the pink granite landscape on foot. As you pass the Curman Villas, not far from Strandvillan, where you will spend the night, remember that it was Mrs Calla Curman who saved the nature reserve from devastation by quarrying.
