About us

The story of "Strandflickorna" began in 1993, when we started our first summer-open youth hostel, ‘Toppensnäckan’. A few years later, a dream came true when we were given the opportunity to rent ‘Strandhotellet’, a charming old wooden building, which had been used as a hotel since 1894. In 1998, we added ‘Havshotellet’, another old wooden building by the sea, built as a care home in 1904, and later used as a hotel for many years. No matter who you are, or why you have chosen to stay with us, we wish to provide you the best service possible. After all, our aim has always been to create a place where people can feel at home while they are away.

Turn of the century romance

We are passionate about the history of Lysekil, and about the beautiful, more than 100-year old buildings that we are privileged enough to run our business from. The town was a spa resort around the turn of the 19th century and in honour of this, we have carefully restored both our guestrooms and the common areas, using traditional wallpaper, Art Noveau furniture and a lot of tongue and grove. Each room at our hotel, Strandflickornas Havshotell, is uniquely decorated, and dedicated to a historical person; some are real, some are imaginary …

This is us

Åsa and Bettina, have run the company together since 1990. Bettina previously worked in the travel industry, both in the Norwegian mountains, and in the French Alps, where she was a site manager. From an early age, Bettina wanted to travel and see the world, which is why she choose to study travel and tourism, a subject she is still passionate about. Åsa studied economics with focus on marketing in Lund, in the south of Sweden. She saw herself working in the marketing department of one of the world’s biggest companies. But their careers took a slightly different turn…

– And we have not regretted this for a single second, exclaims Åsa. To run our own hotel and youth hostel, with the variety this involves, is completely wonderful. It is furnishings and wages one day, marketing and cleaning the next. The feeling of being involved and able to influence the business, and to watch it grow and develop, is unbelievably stimulating and fascinating. Our motto is “have fun at work”, because there is always room for playfulness and creativity. And this gives us the energy and ability to cope with the less enjoyable tasks… Below is a link to a silent movie we recorded on an incredibly cold, but very creative, day in November 1994, to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Villa Strand.

With a modern touch by the sea

Our buildings by the sea, Havsateljén and Badpaviljongen, have been given a more modern touch – our aim here was to achieve harmony with the natural landscape, using lots of glass and granite-grey tones

Our amazing staff

Our wonderful staff are always there to help. We are proud to say that we get a lot of praise for our amazingly helpful employees. Approximately 15 people work here all year round – this more than doubles in the high season, when over 30 people do their utmost to ensure our guests have a great experience.

The best thing about Lysekil is the sea!…all year around….I can’t think of anything better than getting into my sea kayak and heading out into the Bohuslän archipelago, far from all the stress and pulse of modern life… In my kayak I can reach even the smallest coves, where there is no-one else around, just me and the marine wildlife. This is where I find my most genuine nature experiences. As I am also a diver, I am delighted to live close to the best diving waters in Sweden, and I am proud to have the country’s biggest diving centre as my neighbour.

Anyone visiting Lysekil really must go for walk along the paths at Stångehuvud – Lysekil’s beautiful nature reserve, where the granite cliffs reach far into the sea. The path starts at Pinnevik Beach, just 300 metres from our hotel. It leads up narrow, winding granite steps, follows the cliff edge and passes a mysterious lighthouse, before descending into a small valley, finally reaching the Needle’s Eye. Along the path are places to swim and great fishing spots. This is the perfect place to enjoy the sun on a warm summer day, but just as pleasant on a windy autumn day, when the air fills with salty spray from the ocean.

Taking supper on the beach with the family and enjoying the sunset, adds a golden edge to my everyday life. Ending the day with a walk and an ice cream on the dock in the North Harbour is something that is always appreciated by both adults and children!

As I come from the forests of Hälsingland, I love going for walks in the forest of Bohuslän, Fjälla, although I actually appreciate the cliffs at Stångehuvud even more!
The best thing about Lysekil is its closeness to the sea, and the fact that everything you can possibly need is within walking distance!

I love walking along the road Backa gamla byväg in Brastad, a small village 20 kilometres north of Lysekil. This area is unique, as it contains around 20 rocks that are so full of carvings the road is often called ’Via Sacra’ – the Holy Road. This visitor attraction is suitable for everyone, and there are wheelchair ramps by the carving known as The Shoemaker. Another favourite outing is a trip to Härnäset, where I like to enjoy a cup of coffee on the warm, smooth granite cliffs before taking a dip in either Brofjorden or Åbyfjorden.
